Despite its location in Southeast Asia, Laos receives considerably less visitors than some of its neighbor countries like Vietnam and Thailand. However, the tourism industry is improving in the country. The same can be said about the infrastructure and passenger traffic of airports in Laos.

There are two main airports in Laos receiving a considerable amount of international flights. They are the Wattay International Airport in Vientiane and the Luang Prabang International Airport.

Most international flights to both Vientiane and Luang Prabang are somewhat regional, focusing on other Southeastern and Eastern Asian cities. The main international destinations from these airports are in Thailand, China and South Korea.

The main airlines operating in Laos airports are Lao Skyway and Lao Airlines. While Lao Skyway focuses mostly on domestic flights, Lao Skyway has both domestic and international routes to other Asian countries.

As of 2018, all airports in Laos are public owned.

International Airports in Laos

Vientiane Wattay International Airport

The Wattay International Airport (IATA: VTE) is the biggest airport in Laos and serves Vientiane, the capital of the country. It also has the largest numbers of international routes, offered by various Asian airlines. Some of the most popular routes from the Wattay International Airport are to Bangkok and Incheon (Seoul).

Luang Prabang International Airport

Do I Need a Visa for Laos

Laos has a relatively relaxed visa policy, with most European, Asian and American countries allowed to enter in the country for up to 30 days with a visa on arrival. ASEAN countries, Japan, South Korea and Russia are some countries which its passport holders do not require a visa for short stays in Laos. Laos is also planning to introduce a eVisa program in the near future.

As Laos geographical position in Southeast Asia, one of the most visited regions in the world, there are many international airports near Laos with a great infrastructure. You can arrive in number of these and then catch a flight or travel by road or train to your destination in Laos.

The biggest international airports with intercontinental flights close to Laos are in Bangkok, at 650 km to Vientiane, and Hanoi, at 241 km from the Laos border (Pa Hang). From both Bangkok and Hanoi there is a good availability of flights to both Vientiane and Luang Prabang. The Airport of Siem Reap in Cambodia might be a good option especially if you are traveling to Pakxe.
